Being a Cub Scout den leader sometimes feels more like a babysitter than a leader. However when I finally sat down and thought about why this is happening I realized it’s my fault. I haven’t been teaching the boys the Scout Law or any of the Scouting Ideals. So I spend a whole den meeting having the boys go over the Scout Law and what it means. While they where doing this I realized that not only did these boys need this but if everyone lived by the Scout Law the world would be a better place with less fighting and a lot more peace and happiness.
Boy Scout Law
A Scout is:
Full Definition of trustworthy
: worthy of confidence : dependable
Being trustworthy is more than just having somebody’s trust. It’s earning the trust of everyone you come into contact with. In scouting as a scout it means a leader can ask you to do something and they know it will get done to best of your ability. As a leader it means that parents trust you always have the best interests of the boys at heart. In every life it means that anyone you talk to trusts the information you give them is true, to your knowledge. Imagine a world where you could trust the work you paid for to be done correctly, or that people where honest enough to not to steal from you. There would be little need for locks on doors, or passwords on computers.
:having or showing complete and constant support for someone or something
Loyalty is something many people have forgotten about these days. Shoppers have no loyalty to a specific shop it’s all who has the better deal. Sports fans on care about the winning team. Imagine a world where people were supportive of those they cared about. Imagine if everyone was loyal to those who had earned it.
: making it easier to do a job, deal with a problem, etc.
: giving help
: willing to help other people
Every one knows a Scout is helpful, every rank requires a service project of some sort. Scouts not only help the community but each other. If everyone was more helpful the world would be a much better place. Image if everyone would give help to those who need it without expecting anything in return. I can only imagine the problems that could be solved, and the technology that the world could have if everyone was more helpful to their fellow man.
: acting like a friend : kind and helpful
: having or showing the feelings that friends have for each other
: showing support or approval
Being friendly should be pretty easy understand. I would like to it get taken further I suggest everyone go out of their way to be friends and friendly to people they don’t know personally. Imagine if you where friendly with everyone of your neighbors, I personally have never had to call the police on any of my friends, however I know people who call the police on their neighbors all the time. It’s so much easier to walk over to you neighbors and kindly ask them to turn their music down when your friends, than yell at them numerous times and have to call the police.
: very polite in a way that shows respect
Courteousness has become almost a lost act. People don’t open doors for others like they used to. Good manners have been forgotten by most people. Scouts have been taught how to be courteous to others. Imagine how much better driving would be if every driver was courteous, there wouldn’t be terms like road rage.
:Having or showing a friendly, generous, sympathetic, or warm-hearted nature.
A Scout follows the Golden Rule and always treats people as kindly and he wants to be treated. Being kind to others should be everyone’s goal in life.
: willing to do what someone tells you to do or to follow a law, rule
Being obedient is following the rules, and listening to those in charge. Obedience is having enough respect for the rules and laws that instead of breaking them you try to change them or around them for the greater good of society.
: feeling or showing that you are willing to do something without complaining
With some many people being upset and grumpy all the time it’s plain to see there isn’t enough cheer in the world. I suggest that being cheerful makes even the most annoying tasks better and defiantly helps better you mood when you try to be cheerful.
: managing or using money in a careful or wise way
Being thrifty is not just a matter of not spending money. Being thrifty is making sure you can pay your own way. It is also a matter of using your resources in a way that is not wasteful. I can only imagine how much better the world would be if people were not wasteful of natural resources and only spent what they had.
: feeling or showing no fear : not afraid
I suggest being brave is not an absent of fear but the ability to act responsibly even with fear. Being brave is all about doing what’s right even if you are afraid of those you must stand up to, to do it.
: free from pollution or other dangerous substances
: free from dirt, marks, etc. : not dirty
When a person is clean it’s more than just personal hygiene. It’s about living a clean life style. It’s a matter of not only keeping your body clean, but your surrounding clean. No polluting your environment. In fact a Scout always leaves a place better than they found it. If every person had this attitude liter would be unheard of.
: showing a lot of respect : very respectful
Reverence is having respect. Many assume it’s worshiping a higher power, however reverence is about showing the highest amount of respect for any person or thing. I don’t believe anyone will deny that this world needs more reverence.
Now that we all know the Scout Law, it’s simple to see that living by this few words can make a huge difference in the world. I challenge every one to attempt to live by the Scout Law. I also ask if you can if you can think of anything that the Scout Law doesn’t cover, that society should be doing please comment below. I would love to know what else I can do to help the boys in my den become better well rounded adults.
